Postum is the Most-um!

6 May

Do you remember Postum? Postum was a caffeine-free, roasted grain, coffee substitute produced by Kraft food. Made of wheat bran, wheat, molasses, and corn dextrin, it was considered healthier than coffee, and without the coffee jitters side-effect. It was fat free, sodium free, had only ten calories and was also kosher. What more could any health conscious individual want? I have many happy childhood memories of Postum. One in particular stays in my mind…as a young girl, coming home from midnight mass on Christmas Eve and enjoying a cup of hot Postum with a handful of sugar cookies by the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree. For me Postum will always be infused with this warm, cosy, holiday memory.

There are many of us who mourned the end of Postum and who have continued to kindle the hope that it would be back on our supermarket shelves. Imagine my delight then when receiving this email from the new manufacturers of Postum..

We are happy to announce that we have secured production locations, and are heading for commercialization in late spring.   Again, we thank you for your patience – we know that the flavor of Postum has to be right, and our standards for production have caused a longer wait than any of us wanted.

I have also saved an old recipe pamphlet entitled

“Recipes Using Instant Postum”

For those of you who may have a jar squirrel away, or those who want to be ready for Postum’s Second Coming, here’s a delightful recipe to go with your morning cuppa…

Chewy Bars

1 c. sifted all-purpose flour

1/4 c. Instant Postum Cereal beverage

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/8 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 c. chopped pecans

1/3 c. butter

1/2 c. firmly packed brown sugar

1/2 c. granulated sugar

1 egg, slightly beaten

1 tsp vanilla

Sift flour with instant cereal beverage, baking powder, soda and salt. Add pecans and mix well. Melt butter in saucepan; remove from heat. Add the sugars and mix well. Cool slightly. Blend in egg and vanilla. Then add flour mixture, a small amount at a time, mixing well after each addition. Pour into greased 9-inch square pan. Bake at 350 F for 20 to 25 minutes-do not overbake. Cool in pan. Cut in small bars. Makes about 2 dozen bars.

A little bit of Postum history…

Since 1945, Postum is a US code name for polonium-210, used in nuclear weapon initiators.

Not exactly what you want in your morning cup 😦

update 7/14/12

Postum is officially back and ready to buy online…

Oh happy day!!!

I completely forgot about Postum. Probably since it hasn’t been on the market. Thanks for the update and I’ll start to look for it again. If I find any recipes that sound good, I’ll send them to you. Keep up the good work!

Thank you Ann. It’s great to hear from another Postum fan. It’s hard to believe such an icon even went out of production. Now if we could get back Puffa Puffa Rice…

Thank you for this recipe. I was most recently cleaning out my cupboards and discovered a jar of POSTUM by Kraft. I thought to myself “I wonder if there are recipes out there utilizing this stuff”… And, here it is!!! I look forward to trying out these Chewy Bars.

I’m jealous of your Postum find! Any trip to the back of my cupboard would be a frightening journey. Let me know how your chewy bars turn out.
